Pongal Special

Sweet Pongal is a beautiful recipe that is made for the festival of “Pongal or Makara Sankranti”

We in the South of India, especially in the state of Tamilnadu eagerly look
forward to the festival of Pongal(harvest season) also called as “Makara Sankranti”

The festival of Pongal is celebrated with all joy and pompousness and there are a variety of delicacies that are made during the festival and sweet pongal is definitely one of them.

In this special edition I am posting a simple and lucid way of preparing “Sweet Pongal” using Millets.

Traditionally Pongal is prepared in earthen pots by cooking it using woods and dried leaves from coconut tree, I however am showcasing a conventional method of cooking the same

Little Millets: 1 Cup
Moong Dal: 1 1/2 Cup
Cardamon: 3-4 pods
Sunflower Seeds: 2 tbsp
Palm Candy: 1 Cup
Milk: 2 Cups
Raisins: 4-6 pods
Ghee: 2 tbsp
Salt: A pinch

Method of Preparation

Wash the Millets & Moong Dal gently in water
Pressure cook the Millets & Moong Dal together and keet it aside
Seperately take a kadai and gently fry the Sunflower seeds and raisins in Ghee and wait for the raisins to bloat.
Now, add some water to dilute the Moong dal & millets and stir it well before adding it to the mixture
Add 2 cups of milk along with 1 cup of palm candy and continually stir to ensure that the moong dal does not get burnt
Finally add the fried sunflower seeds & raisins and give it a gentle mix
Viola!! Sweet Pongal is ready to be served
