“Raw Mango rice(Mamidikaya Pulihora)”, is  a very simple South Indian styled rice made with raw mangoes. You will find this recipe to be almost similar to the “Lemon Rice Recipe”, I had posted on my blog earlier because the method is almost similar the only difference is the tanginess is replaced with raw mangoes here.

The taste in the mango rice recipe gets derived from cooking the mango in oil thoroughly along with curry leaves and the other spices.Firstly let’s see what we can achieve by making this recipe.

Raw mangoes are rich in vitamin C as we all know but they also say that the acid present in raw mangoes helps in digestion and control constipation. Also it helps keep our skin softer and healthier. Juices prepared using raw mangoes give instant energy due to its Vitamin C presence and thereby also helps prevent dehydration besides that raw mangoes are high source of pectins  therefore if it gets mixed with honey an salt its helps cure gastro intestinal disorders.

Coming back to the recipe,It’s a very popular dish in the southern states of India and is popularly known as( Mangai Sadam) in Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh it’s called as (Mavikaya Pulihora  )where as in Karnataka it’s called as (Mavinakayi Chitranna).

I was inspired of this raw mango rice from Andhra Pradesh, the place I spent my maximum career time, before marriage. In Andhra Pradesh, the placed I stayed Hyderabad they even like to eat Pulihora(flavoured tangyrice) for their breakfast. Pulihora is  basically a tangy rice recipe made from Tamarind or lemon with some spices and aromatic curry leaves. During the festival of Ugadi  few of them may even replace this raw mango with lemon rice. The preparation is almost same like lemon rice however the tang from lemon get replaced with raw mangoes and each has got it’s unique taste.

This rice is mildly tangy with lot of aromas from ginger, curry leaves and roasted peanuts.

Take a pan heat it, add Til oil, ideally this oil is preferred for making any types of mixed rice like Tamarind, Lemon, Til or any variety rice.Temper it with mustard seeds, Urad and Chana dal one by one till golden.Add chopped green chilies and red chilies along with grated ginger.

Add handful of curry leaves let it leave all its flavor in the oil.Add roasted peanuts and fry till golden.Add a pinch of turmeric powder, hing and required salt for taste and fry little.

Add grated Mangoes towards end as it may turn mashy. Once it’s cooked well keep aside let it cool.

I recommend to serve it after an hour also  for it to taste better along with some papads or aloo fry.
