Drumstick Leaves – Murugai Keerai Podi

Drumstick Leaves – Murungai Keerai Podi is a very tasty, healthy and nutritious podi(powder) which is prepared using dried drumstick leaves. This podi is typically served with Til oil for items like rice, dosa or idli’s.

Dried Drum stick leaves are ground with channa dal, urad dal, cumin seeds, red chillies, asafetida and salt.   While I have mentioned the health benefits of Murunga Alai in my earlier blogs too(link given below),  however kindly find some additional facts about Murunga Keer

  • Drumstick is known to help increases our appetite.
  • Its medicinal properties heals the wounds inside the stomach.
  • It is known to help reduce headache and blood diarrhea
  • Also plays an important role to purify blood and excrete toxins out of the body.

I have posted a few recipes using drumstick leaves such as

Ingredients:

Murungai leaves:1 cup

Peanuts: 2 tbsp

Channa Dal: 2 tbsp

Urad Dal: 3 tbsp

Red chilies: 4

Salt: As per taste

Coriander Seeds: 1 tbsp

Jeera: 1 tbsp

Garlic: 1 clove (optional)

Method of Preparation:

To begin, wash the drumstick leaves and separate them from the stem. Dry the leaves overnight by spreading it in a clean towel.

One by one dry roast all the ingredients.

Dry roast drumstick leaves slightly without burning.

Grind all the roasted ingredients along with roasted Murungai keerai.

Serve along with ghee or gingely oil for rice, idli or dosa..

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp Chana Dal
  • 3 tbsp Urad Dal
  • 4 nos Red Chilies
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Seeds
  • 1 tbsp Jeera
  • 1 clove Garlic Optional
  • Salt as per Taste

Instructions

  1. To begin, wash the drumstick leaves and separate them from the stem. Dry the leaves overnight by spreading it in a clean towel.
