Broken Wheat Upma – Dalia Upma
If you are somebody who is continually following me you would by now have realized that I am continuously experimenting to provide with healthy, nutritious recipes. I am of the strong opinion that a healthy breakfast which is packed with energy goes a long way in a person’s life. My recipe for the day is ” Broken Wheat Upma /Dalia Upma”
A lot of them show an immediate dislike towards an Upma made out of broken wheat & barley but if you plate it like the image shown below even a staunch hater of this recipe(like my husband) would get enticed towards eating it.
Barley and broken wheat both have their own associated health benefits, so it only makes sense to combine the both towards making a healthy, delicious & nutritious upma with an accompaniment of either coconut or carrot chutney.
Barley helps to maintain healthy body weight and also provides the adequate amount of manganese and selenium which is required for the day .Furthermore It plays a role in maintaining proper bone health and heart health if taken in a small proportion in your daily diet. The fiber in these also helps in digestion too.
Broken wheat has we all knew is highly nutritious so a combination of these two will give great energy required for the day. If you ever say upma is today’s breakfast not many smiling faces you get to see in the home something that is seen at least in my home so I thought let me try different combos and try plating it differently and trust me it’s a success.
Both my husband my little girl liked the recipe I am glad they did.
Barley: 1 cup
Broken wheat: 1 cup
Oil: 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds: 1/2 tbsp
Urad dhal: 1/2 tbsp
Channa dhal: 1/2 tbsp
Curry leaves: 8
Green chilies: 4 s:lit
Onions chopped: 1 cup
Tomatoes chopped: 1 cup
Chopped Carrots, French beans (optional)
Hing: 1/2 tbsp
Salt: As per taste
How to make this recipe?
Step 1: Take a pan add oil allow it to heat then add mustard seeds once spluttered then add Chana dhal first once it’s slightly golden brown add urad dhal fry till golden.
Step 2: Add curry leaves and green chilies so that flavors gets in the oil and makes the upma flavorful.
Step 3: Add onions and little salt and fry salt will help onions to cook faster. That add tomatoes and cook till its tender and mashy.
Step 4: Add the barley broken wheat and salt for taste fry some more time. At this stage and required water and hing cover it and cook in a slow flame.
Step 5: At this stage if you wish you can add spoon of ghee and coriander leaves which is optional which will enhance it’s flavor of the upma.

- 1p cup Barley
- 1 cup Broken Wheat
- 2 tbsp Oil
- 1/2 tbsp Mustard Seeds
- 1/2 tbsp Urad Dal
- 1/2 tbsp Chana Dal
- 8 springs Curry Leaves
- 4 slit Green Chilies
- 1 cup Chopped Onions
- 1 cup Chopped Tomatoes
- 1 cup Chopped Carrots Optional
- 1 cup Chopped French Beans Optional
- 1/2 tbsp Hing
- Salt as per Taste
